Research has identified a stage of child development which occurs between the ages 4-7 during which there is a fascination with weapons. Why is this? Theories point to the feeling of powerlessness that a child—a small person in a big world—experiences.
Imaginative play with a safe toy sword allows a child to explore those feelings and experience a feeling of mastery over his fears.
Before handing a child a toy sword in my kindergarten class, I always recited this verse: "Use it for right, to carry the light, not for some silly quarrel or fight."
