Three Ways to Fold Waldorf Window Stars

Folding Waldorf window stars is a fun and simple craft. You can make basic designs that are easy enough to involve young children or add additional steps to create more intricate shapes. Folding the colorful kite paper during quiet time is a relaxing way to center and focus your mind. They are beautiful when displayed in the window with light filtering through or hanging above a nature table in seasonal colors.

Choose your Kite Paper

• Start with eight squares of kite paper. For a smaller star, cut the larger pieces into four equal squares. 
• Fold the paper in half. 
• Fold it in half again. These folds create guidelines to follow to make sure the lines turn out evenly.
• Unfold back into the large square.

• Fold each corner to the center point.
• Turn paper to face you in a diamond shape, and fold one corner into the center.
• Fold the other corner into the center, creating a kite shape, and glue these two sides down with a glue stick.

• Repeat with the remaining seven squares of paper.
• Glue each side together, placing the new piece on top of the previous one. Make sure you glue with the folds facing up and tuck the final side under the first piece to complete the pattern.

Tada! You’ve completed your first window star! Fold a piece of tape to make a loop, stick on the back of the window star and hang it up!

Time to Add a Little Flare

 

• To fold this Waldorf window star you’ll need two sheets of kite paper. Cut each sheet into four equal squares, resulting in a total of eight. 
• Fold the sheet in half to make a triangle. 
• Unfold back into a square, then fold one corner into the center. Repeat with the opposite side. 
• Glue these folds down.

• Fold the top edge to meet the center. Repeat with the opposite side.
• Glue these folds down.
• Repeat with the seven remaining squares.
• Glue each side together, lining up edges with the center of the next side, making sure to tuck the final side under the first. 

A Wintry Waldorf Window Star

• Start with eight squares of kite paper. For a smaller star, cut kite paper into four equal squares.
• Fold the kite paper in half into a rectangle.
• Fold in half again into a skinnier rectangle. 
• Unfold and fold top corner in to meet the center. Repeat with the opposite corner. If a younger one is helping, line up the edges, then let them make the final crease. 

• Glue these folds down. Gluing is one way children can help with more complex stars.
• Fold bottom corner toward center.
• Repeat with the opposite side.
• Fold one side in to meet the middle line. 
• Repeat with the opposite side and glue both folds down.

• Fold bottom corners in to the middle line.
• Repeat with the seven remaining squares.
• Glue sides together, placing the edge of one piece on the center of the next. Make sure to tuck the final side under the first and glue down.
