Celebrate Winter Solstice, also known as the shortest day (and longest night) of the year, with this simple night and day felt play mat that is perfect for pretend play, storytelling, or holding your celebration rings.
Gather Your Supplies:
These are the tools we used to create our Winter Solstice Play Mat:
- Felt sheets
- Embroidery thread and needle
- Scissors
Create your Winter Solstice Play Mat:
Step 1:
Cut your felt sheets into 4 half circles (this will create your two full circles, one for day one for night). You want two to be in white for snow, one yellow for day (or sunset), and one dark blue for night. Cut out triangle and star shapes from a light yellow felt. We used 5 stars and 8 triangles.
Step 2:
Sew the stars on the blue half circle, and the triangles on the yellow half circle, the triangles should form an arch around the edge of half circle.
Step 3:
Sew the white half circles to the blue and the yellow as shown below.
Step 4:
Using a blanket stitch, sew the two circles together (back to back).
Step 5:
Enjoy your new play mat! You can also use this mat with our Over the Moon Celebration Ring to celebrate the beauty of the Winter Solstice and welcome back the light.
