Craft a Felt Duckling and Egg Pocket

Easter is just around the corner and with that, an abundance of beautiful Easter themed crafts and projects are here too. These hand-sewn felt ducklings and egg pockets are the sweetest addition to your child’s easter basket. This craft will use a variety of hand-sewing techniques including French knots, Lazy Daisy stitch, blanket stitch and a ladder stitch (invisible stitch). It is the perfect project to keep inside your handbag and work on while the kids play outside, or while you’re enjoying a nice cosy cup of tea.

This sweet craft was created by the talented Sewn by Neens

Make your Own Felt Duckling and Egg Pocket:

Step 1:

First we will prepare our materials.

Cut out the following felt pieces: 2x whole eggs (cream), 2x half eggs (cream), 2 duckling bodies (yellow), 2 duckling wings (yellow), 2 duckling feet (orange) and 2 duckling bills (orange).

Step 2:

Take 1 of your half egg felt pieces, an embroidery needle and your embroidery threads. It is now time to create some beautiful, embroidered details on the front of your egg pocket. You can choose to embroider any type of pattern or design in any colours of your choosing. I will be creating embroidered flowers on my egg today.

To replicate my design, begin by using the pattern to mark out the position for each flower. Use a pencil to lightly draw 5 small petals. Use your needle and thread to fill in these petals using the colours of your choosing. To create the flower centre, we will be using a French knot.

To create a French knot, bring your needle up into the centre of the petals. Wrap the thread around the needle 1-2 times. While the thread is still wrapped, insert your needle back into the exact spot your needle came out and gently pull the needle through. This will create a small knot at the front of your work.

To create the leaves, we will use a ‘Lazy Daisy Stitch’. Using green thread, bring your needle up right next to one of the flower petals. Insert the needle directly back into the same hole but do not pull your thread tight, yet. Bring your needle up again, this time where you want the tip of your leaf to be and catch the loop. Gently pull the thread to create the shape of your leaf and then secure this with a tiny stitch.

Step 3:

Take your embroidered half egg and place it directly on top of your second half egg, right side up. Use quilting clips of pins to secure these together at the top. We will not be sewing the curved edge yet.

Step 4:

Using an embroidery thread that matches the colour of the egg, blanket stitch across the top of the egg, attaching the 2 pieces together.

Step 5:

Next, take both of the whole egg felt pieces and place these directly on top of each other. Take your layered half egg felt pieces and place these directly on top of the whole egg. You will now have 4 layers of felt. Secure these together using quilting clips or pins.

Step 6:

Using a cream embroidery thread, blanket stitch around the entire outside edge of the egg. You have now completed the egg pocket and we will now move onto creating the felt duckling.

Step 8:

Take both pieces of the duck bill and blanket stitch around the curved edge, leaving the straight edge unsewn. Stuff the bill lightly with wool roving.

Step 9:

Sew the bill onto the duckling’s face using a ladder stitch (invisible stitch). Using matching thread colours, attach the wings and the feet onto the body of the duckling using a blanket stitch. Stuff lightly.

Use black thread to create 2 small French knots on the ducklings face. This will be the ducklings’ eyes.

Step 11:

Use a blanket stitch to attach the front and back together, using a matching thread colour. When you are 6-7cm away from your starting stitch, stuff the duckling’s body. Finish the blanket stitch and close the gap. Tie off your thread.
