Turn Found Treasures Into Nature Mandalas

Turn Found Treasures Into Nature Mandalas

One of the best parts of a day spent at the beach is collecting all of the amazing treasures. Whether it is a collection of shells, polished stones, or sea glass, these collections stay with us and offer lovely memories from our time spent by the shore.

In honor of beach collections, this simple nature mandala encourages children to notice patterns, symmetry, and the beauty found in nature No glue is needed, making this loose parts activity an invitation to create, admire, and then start all over again. Making temporary art is a great lesson in letting go, just like making sandcastles, and each mandala is meant to be enjoyed in the moment before the treasures return to the basket, ready for another design.

Gather Your Materials

  • A collection of seashells
  • Sea glass (optional)
  • Smooth stones or pebbles
  • Coral, driftwood, or other beach treasures (optional)
  • A flat surface or tray

Found Seashell & Nature Treasure Mandalas

Step 1: Choose Your Beach Treasures

Begin by laying out all of your collected treasures where everyone can see them. Part of the fun is taking time to notice the differences in shape, color, and texture.

Step 2: Center Your Mandala

Choose one special item for the center of your mandala. It might be a starfish, a large shell, or an interesting stone.

Step 3: Create Your Mandal Design

Working outward, arrange similar objects in rings around the center. You might place matching shells opposite one another or create repeating patterns with stones and sea glass. There is no right or wrong way to build your design. Let your child experiment, move pieces around, and discover what feels balanced.

As your mandala grows, pause occasionally to look at it from above and from different angles. Does it need another ring? Would a different shell work better?

Step 4: Document Your Creation

When everyone has finished, take a photograph before carefully returning each treasure to the basket for another day.

Extend the Activity

Once you've made one mandala, try changing just one element.

  • Create a mandala using only shells.
  • Sort treasures by color before arranging them.
  • Make one with only circles, or only long, narrow objects.
  • Work together to build one large family mandala.
  • Take your basket outside and create a design on the sand, a tree stump, or the forest floor using whatever nature provides.

A Few Questions to Ask While Creating

  • Which treasure is your favorite? What makes it special?
  • Which objects look alike?
  • Which are completely different?
  • What patterns do you notice in shells and stones?
  • If you could add one more treasure to your mandala, what would you choose?

Sometimes the simplest activities become the ones children return to again and again. A basket of natural treasures, a quiet afternoon, and a little space to create are often all that's needed. Working with symmetry and pattern is not only creative but allows for kids to develop spatial understanding and early math skills. So gather your seashells and treasures and create away!
