Welcome to Week 1 of Our Summer Book Club
We're so excited to start our 5th summer book club with The Princess in the Forest, a timeless classic from beloved author, Sibyl Von Olfers. We couldn't think of a more perfect companion for long summer days than this woodsy and magical tale. Sibyl von Olfers has been a treasured name in Waldorf homes and classrooms for generations, and The Princess in the Forest shows us exactly why.
In her rose-covered castle deep in the woods, a princess wakes each morning to the dancing dew children who help her dress, while the gentle moss children bring a breakfast gathered from the forest. After her lessons she wanders deeper among the trees to play with her animal friends and tell stories to the little mushroom children. When the day is done, the star children shimmer into life to guide her safely home. It is a story that moves slowly, sweetly, filled with small wonders, just like summer. And who wouldn't want a day like this!

Day 1: Read & Discuss
Begin by gathering together to read the story aloud, slowly and unhurriedly. As you turn the pages, pause to look closely at the illustrations and notice the vibrant colors Sibyl von Olfers chose to bring her forest world to life.
When you've finished, open up the conversation and let your children lead.
- What were their favorite moments?
- What made a big impression?
- What questions did the story stir up?
This kind of slow, thoughtful discussion lets a story settle in and resonate long after the last page is turned.
To help guide your conversation, we've put together a list of discussion questions and prompts specific to the book below.
- Imagine having a conversation with a crow! How would they sound? What would you talk about?
- Which character would you choose to be if you lived in these woods?
- Imagine how the princess' walks in the forest change with each season?
Day 2: Writing & Drawing Prompt
On the second day, return to the story and retell it together. Children naturally bring stories to life through drawing, writing, and imaginative play, and a cozy creative corner with crayons, pencils, and paper is all the invitation they need. Keep the book nearby as a springboard for whatever unfolds.
Here is a short prompt to spark their royal forest storytelling adventure:
You are a royal child wandering through the woods when you come upon a gaggle of mushroom children. What story will you tell them today? Write it, draw it, or both.
Day 3: Paired Craft: Make a Felt Covered Sketchbook
For this week's special project, children can create their very own felt-covered sketchbook. A place to collect drawings, stories, observations, and imaginative ideas throughout our Summer Book Club adventure. Using colorful felt pieces and simple appliqué sewing designs or glue (if you prefer!), each notebook becomes a one-of-a-kind creation, that will be by your children's side through every book, activity, and moment of inspiration this summer.
